He looks old, he walks old, he talks old, he thinks old. He’s…..old. Thank God Joe Biden is our president. He has served the public through the great inflation years of the late 70’s. As a U.S. senator he’s held a front row seat as climate change became an issue in the 80’s and 90’s and despite the myriad warnings, watched the problem fester and grow to today as it threatens the existence of the planet. He has been there through the civil rights movements from MLK to George Floyd; has witnessed forever wars in Vietnam and had the guts to finally pull the plug on Afghanistan. He has witnessed the women’s movement from Betty Freidan to Texas SB8. He has been there during several worldwide threatening pandemics, the dissolve of the Soviet Union and now Vladimir Putin’s push for Soviet era type power. Biden has been there through the vicissitudes of nuclear arms control. He has been a public servant for 20% of our countries experiment with democracy, an experiment that has never been more fragile and vulnerable in the past 160 years than now. Throughout our nation’s history there have only been 2 senators who have served as Chairman of the most impactful post of both the Senate Judiciary and Foreign Relations Committees, 1 was Wisconsin Senator Alexander Wiley in the 1940’s and 50’s, the other is Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. Must I remind us he was the VP to the first president of color. Wisdom. Empathy born from personal tragedy, causing human reactions to tough issues what some would call gaffes. He gaffed his way into forcing Barack Obama’s hand on same sex marriage.
Yes, he is flawed but he has grown.
So many threats to our society, our country and our planet are now occurring all at once.
As for his advanced years, you can’t perform at this level with this amount of urgency for so many crises and suffer from an age causing debilitating disease.
And now we must confront Vladimir Putin.
I was one of those that believed whatever it takes to tangle with a modern-day European tyrant, be it urging assassinations, returning the threat of nuclear war, anything to counter his threats of nuclear preparedness, cyber-attacks, the disrespect of country boundaries and disrupting and destroying lives including children, elderly and babies. Let’s make him pay for misinformation infecting our election process and dividing our country, no measure should be dismissed. Yet it seems like the president’s strategy of heavy economic sanctions promulgated on Putin’s government combined with humanitarian and non-combatant military aid has at least stalled the Russian governments vision of Armageddon.
Thank God Biden is president and I’m not. Thank God our previous president wasn’t there or presidents that require on the job training with room for mistakes. Today there is no room.
There are now cracks in the Putin strategy. Rays of hope that World War III or even a nuclear standoff with all its possibilities and pratfalls are not worth it.
I don’t know if he runs again but I know for right now he is the president of our times.
